Finally an Alternative to Plastic Jugs of Laundry Detergent

For years I felt guilty about buying big jugs of liquid laundry detergent.  Oh sure – THEY say that the jugs are recyclable, but if they ever do wind up in the recycling chain, it takes a certain amount of energy to recycle them.  Only one in five are actually recycled There are mountains of them being discarded in landfills and floating in our waterways. Add to that there’s the fossil fuel use to transport them from factory to store.  The quandary was I did not want to go back to powder since it didn’t dissolve easily in my cold water wash.

Recently laundry sheets came to my attention.  Somehow technology has been developed to concentrate laundry detergent into dissolvable sheets that are also cuttable for smaller loads.  There are a variety of environmentally friendly brands available.

This Ecos brand was the most affordable and the company claims the product contains only plant enzymes for cleaning, however, no specific ingredients are listed.  It does the job of cleaning well but I am annoyed that even though it says fragrance-free, there is an obnoxious scent that disappears in the wash.  Additionally, The product is produced in Hong Kong China with a nonrecyclable wrapper.   Given a choice though, between laundry jugs, I would select these hands down. In the future, however, I will not purchase these again. I will try other brands just to compare. Next will be True Earth, a US Company that offers probably the best environmental solution- more expensive but you get what you pay for.

I have yet to find laundry sheets in stores but there are numerous brands available online.  Check them out.  I will never be returning to those big plastic jugs of laundry detergent again!
