Giving New Life to Old Cell Phones

They usually lurk in junk drawers, your former cell phones that you no longer have use for and you don’t know quite what to do with.  Whatever you do- don’t throw them in the garbage!  Cell phones contain all kinds of nasty toxins like arsenic, lead and lithium-ion batteries contain a variety of heavy metals that will seep into the environment.  They are also a fire hazard in waste facilities.

Here are some options-

DONATE–  Organizations that help victims of domestic violence, overseas military, and medical workers in third world countries are often in need of cell phones.  Click HERE for more info.  Often they pay for shipping.

GOODWILL DROP OFF– Drop them off at your local Goodwill.  They will take care of recycling and donating.

RECYCLE-Take them to an electronics recycling drop-off- often your local recycling depot will have a bin for electronics. Call your local garbage company for details

Remember that your trash can be someone else’s treasure.  Keep your cell phone out of the landfill!

P. S. –before doing any of the above suggestions be sure to wipe the data from your phone’s hard drive.  Here’s how

  1. Hi Alanna. I belong to CREDO and they recycle/refurbish all their phones. They also donate some of their proceeds to good causes (at least in my book). You dont mention not buying a brand new phone everytime one comes on the market. Also, everyone should remove their SIM card or expunge all data from their phones!

A deeper dive into all the materials and extractions that go into phones is truly mind-boggling.

Sorry, you dialed/tapped into a raw nerve/personal hotspot! Ha ha Patricia
